Your task: Guest speakers

Complete each of the sections below:

Part 1: If you had to teach only face-to-face

If you had to use this strategy in teaching face-to-face, to be as effective as possible:
  • (a) What could you do in class? List key components that would make this strategy most effective)
introduce speaker, how they connect the course material,' it's an honor to have them'; have students prepared with a question for the guest speaker/write down questions on index card; bring in authentic learning component to tie in to course/real example of the topic; utilize an expert that knows more than the instructor about a topic; physically meeting the speaker could benefit the student--increase engagement
  • (b) What could students do outside of class in preparation for and/or as a follow up to the seat time in class?
prepare questions; be on time; read a speaker bio, etc

Part 2: If you had to teach only online:

If you had to use this strategy in teaching fully online, to be as effective as possible:
  • (a) What could students do on their own (working independently using any resources provided)?
List key resources & components that would make this strategy most effective) read an article/bio on the speaker; come up with questions; google the speaker; UM Connect (stream live) or recording, give them the choice of meeting together to hear speaker? video the speaker at their research location (their own environment)

  • (b) In what ways could students work collaboratively/interact with others online in preparation for and/or as a follow up to their independent work?
collaboratively come up with questions for speaker; email questions after seeing the talk; speaker could come back to take part in online discussion forums

Part 3: If you could teach a hybrid class (taking the best of both worlds):

If you had a choice and could make the best of both worlds by teaching using this strategy in a hybrid class, what would you do and would you have students do:
  • (a) in the face-to-face component of the class? live presentation (either in live, or on video); record for later viewing; students can ask questions live

  • (b) in the online component of the class? prep for speaker (read bio, etc.); have speaker involved in a follow-up discussion forum on course website; part of the talk might be done online (maybe the topic is suited for both live and online components).
