DIER as it appears on the NCATE DIER page from 2002

All candidates admitted to UMD from Fall 2003 will be required to complete a diversity immersion experience requirement (DIER) in order to be able to earn a teaching license from any of our licensure programs. [definition of DIER here. jk] The criteria for meeting this requirements are as follows:
  1. Candidates must first get approval from their advisor regarding their proposed DIER prior to beginning the experience.
  2. Candidates must spend a minimum of forty hours at a formal or non-formal educational setting that has a high percentage (greater than fifty percent) of children, young adults, or families from non-dominant U.S. cultures. [definition of culture here. jk] Examples:

    • volunteer experience in a special education classroom or school (e.g., Woodland Hills and Northwood Children's Home])
    • volunteer in the children’s program at the Women’s Shelter
    • volunteer at Copeland Community Center
    • volunteer to work with families who are speakers of languages other than English (e.g., Adult Learning Center(?))
    • student teaching abroad (through Global Student Teaching Program) in a classroom in which the candidate is a minority relative to her/his own culture, class, or race
    • student teaching in the Twin Cities in which the candidate is in a classroom in which the candidate is a minority relative to her/his own culture, class, or race
    • student teaching or practicum experience at Fond du Lac Ojibwe School or other north-eastern Minnesota classroom in which the candidate is a minority relative to her/his own culture, class, or race
    • participation in an Immersion Experience such as the one sponsored by CHUM in Duluth, or at the Urban Center on Lake St. in Minneapolis
    • participation on a week-long stay at the Little Village Lawndale High School in Chicago
    • study abroad program in which the candidate is a minority in a classroom relative to her/his own culture, class, or race
  3. This DIER may be met at any time after admission to their licensure program and before graduation [this is what it used to say: between candidates' admission to UMD and their completion of their license. However, it does NOT include experiences gained from course work assignments (e.g., projects assigned in Educ 1100: Human Diversity).
  4. The DIER will follow a self-guided format in which candidates will complete a set of reflective questions both before and after the experience. They are strongly encouraged to keep an ongoing journal or record during their experience to help them support their responses at the end of the experience. These reflective responses must become part of their final electronic portfolio (and can be used as artifacts under INTASC standard 3). Satisfactory completion and submission of documentation on all DIER activities is required in order for candidates to be recommended for licensure.
